Gravity Well

posted by scarlet

The newest song we’ve completed writing and recording is Gravity Well, and it’s almost ready to mix.  Once that’s done, we’ll post it and I’ll announce that it’s available.  We had a lot of fun recording the harmonies for this one, it required projection of a certain attitude that could only be achieved by singing the harmony parts in a unusual voice.  We should have videoed that session, it would’ve made you laugh.

My favorite part of this song is the chorus, “The game is hide and seek till I find myself, hidden in illusion at the bottom of – the gravity well.”  the music is played a bit heavier to portray the gravity.

And of course there’s nowhere to go from the bottom of the Gravity Well but up. ;-)

It’s part of the Labyrinth collection that will be featured in a new section on the Psychanaut website.  Many of the songs in the Labyrinth you’ve already heard at Rock Scarlet shows…such as Wayside, Egypt Eyes, Oracle & Alchemy Waits.  What’s been missing is a format to present them and let them tell a story.

So adding this piece is going to help bring it all together.  Of course, if you don’t want to venture into the Labyrinth or play with ideas, and you just wanna rock — you can still get the songs directly from the download page… but eventually, the Labyrinth will be a cool way to preview the tunes while visiting some cool imagery within the Labyrinth.

PS)I’m looking for artistic people to help with creation of  the Labyrinth artwork.  If you’re interested or  want to help out, contact me either from ScarletJinn.com Psychanut.com or Rock Scarlet.com.

New Songs!

posted by scarlet

Some of you have been asking about new songs, and YES! – we are writing/arranging a bunch of new tunes – some of which we’ve started tossing into live shows, such as Seven Wonders.  As we play the clubs/bars, we realize that some people want to hear some familiar tunes to dance to, and we’ve added a few more remakes to meet these requests.  (It also keeps the bars happy, since dancers buy a lot of beer!)  But it’s a delicate line that we tread, and our balancing act is not without stumbles.

Friday Oct 9th at Happy Hours

posted by scarlet

Well Autumn is here and it’s October already… now that its cooler, we’ll just have to heat things up a bit!  Coming up soon, a Friday night Rock Scarlet show at Happy Hours.  We’ll do four sets, probably a new remake or two, and maybe a new original (assuming we get the bugs out in time for this show).  Shows at Happy Hours start at 9PM.

If you’ve seen my entries on Facebook and Twitter, you know that I recently spent a bunch of hours re-working our digital backdrop for tomorrow night’s Rock Scarlet show.  While working on it, I realized that it’s really a Psychanaut backdrop: cool space scenes and psychedelic morphing colors and swirls – so I was pretty inspired to work with it.

Time for a new drummer for RS!

posted by scarlet

OK, it’s time for Rock Scarlet to start looking for a new drummer!  Although we’ll miss Richie, new energy is always great, and change is good  –  Sooo here we go!

Richie will play a few more shows if necessary, but we’re actively looking for the right person NOW.  That would be somebody who knows how to ROCK …and plays well with others.  LOL.  Someone who has the energy to be a part of what we’re about,  and wants to do fun and (mostly) paying gigs.

New songs…

posted by scarlet

Working on a few new tunes that are going to be a bit more dynamic and airy than our usual fair, but definitely still rock.   Finally, it feels like we’re creating the musical energy that goes with the lyrics.

Rehearsal and updates

posted by scarlet

Last Wednesday we had a great rehearsal; we’re working up a bunch of new tunes, rearranging bits and getting them ready to perform and record.  We’d skipped last week, and we’ll skip this upcoming week too… so it was important to really get a bunch done in the time we had together.  It was great to smooth out some of the rough spots in songs like Egypt Eyes.  We’ve dropped the metal style bridge in favor of a more Egyptian, airy, haunting bridge – the song finally feels right!

We’re also working on studio overdubs for a bunch of songs – there’s two or perhaps 3 CDs worth here recorded or partially recorded, and we really need to buckle down and get them done.  Meanwhile, Brian  came up with some new riffs and new songs are happening, too…  so we’re busy both in the writing energy as well as the recording.

No shows in the next upcoming weeks, we’re hoping to use this time to get some of this stuff done.  And it’s also spring, and all the great springtime emerald valley things are happening – flowers, gardening, sunshine, spring rain, walking, biking… I like to take time to be very “present” in the moment and not take anything for granted; it’s an ongoing challenge to keep my mind on the activity at hand and not always be thinking of all the stuff that needs doing.   But the songs are just running through my mind all the time, new and established tunes… there’s a music traffic jam in  there clamoring for attention.:-)
