{"id":397,"date":"2009-11-18T10:07:51","date_gmt":"2009-11-18T10:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scarletjinn.com\/blog\/?p=397"},"modified":"2009-11-18T10:07:51","modified_gmt":"2009-11-18T10:07:51","slug":"a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scarletjinn.com\/?p=397","title":{"rendered":"A funny thing happened on the way to the show\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Friday, we had that show booked at Goodfellas.&#160; That day, Richie called and said that he\u2019d booked a flight leaving at 5AM, and couldn\u2019t do the show since we\u2019d be playing till 2AM.&#160; Uh oh!&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Well, we wouldn\u2019t cancel a show with that short of notice (unless we were deathly ill or worse).&#160; No matter where the venue, we wouldn\u2019t leave our fans hanging, or the venue without a band; so we had to do some quick thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Brian spoke with Richie and it appeared for a while that Richie would play drums with us till midnight\u2026 but somehow communication got confused.&#160; Mike came and picked up the band\u2019s house drum set (so Richie wouldn\u2019t have to set anything up).&#160;&#160; But then later he talked to Richie who had decided he couldn\u2019t make it at all \u2013 so Mike didn\u2019t bring the drum set to Goodfellas and assumed the band simply would not play \u2013 and <em>he disappeared with the drum set in his car.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>Brian and Daemon both play some drums, so we had figured that they might trade off on drums and guitars if worse came to worst.&#160; It was now obvious that our bassist also wasn\u2019t coming to the show, but we hoped he had dropped off the drum kit at Goodfellas.<\/p>\n<p>It was getting late and we were still making calls\u2026no substitute drummer was available.&#160; So we decided to just bring the acoustic equipment, some percussion, and a positive attitude &#8211; and <em>just<\/em> <em>go for i<\/em>t as a trio.&#160; (Now, we\u2019ve been planning a new project with more dynamics, called Psychanaut.&#160; It would be&#160; able to play both heavy and lighter versions of the songs, and be able to adapt to various venues, with more dynamics \u2013 not so slammy as Rock Scarlet\u2026 but it&#160; was not even completely assembled yet.&#160; It certainly wasn\u2019t ready.)<\/p>\n<p>We got to the venue, and nope \u2013 no drums!&#160; So there we were, setting up, when a guy asked if we played \u201cheavy metal.\u201d&#160; My heart sank a bit.&#160;&#160; This show would not be as loud and heavy as Rock Scarlet usually is, much less <em>metal<\/em>\u2026would they like it?&#160; Then a&#160; few people started showing up.&#160; Some of our favorite friend\/fans were there.&#160; I felt&#160; bad that they wouldn\u2019t get the full Rock Scarlet show they were expecting.&#160; <em>Would they like what we were going to do?<\/em>&#160; With no bass and drums?<\/p>\n<p>We started playing, with the guys switching from electric guitars to acoustic guitars and slide guitars\u2026it began rough as we felt our way in this strange format.&#160;&#160; I fumbled around with the shaker and tambourine a bit\u2026and yet people started digging it!&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Then suddenly a drummer (Michael Axel Fleming) appeared in the audience, looked around and found an overturned plastic bucket \u2013 and started playing it like a drum.&#160; It didn\u2019t sound half bad!&#160;&#160; We handed him our cow bell too and It started sounding pretty cool!
