Between the Worlds

Between the Worlds
I’m sure you’ve felt it too…the feeling as if you live “between the worlds”.  As you determine to be ever more genuine in your life, there’s always that pressure to conform to what others expect you to be.  It’s often been a challenge being a rock singer and being somewhat (for lack of a better word) “awake”.

New Age and metaphysical people tend to like mellow new age music, and sometimes they are quite resistant to rock’s passionate power. Rock fans sometimes want lyrics that are very accessible, you know boy-girl stuff and party tunes, and that’s not my writing style.  Sometimes it feels like there’s a general failure of imagination that results in humanity’s tendency to label and pigeonhole everything…it limits our experiences and our perceptions.

When I was a kid I used to describe the way that certain adults seemed to live in a black and white move, while I preferred to live in color.

So I’ve spent my life in what sometimes feels like being between two worlds.

At one point I had investors and record people dictating that I write more commercially, and at that time, I did…hiding my allegories in clever wording that could be construed as relationship songs and the like. But it didn’t feel quite right, and now, after all these years, I write exactly what comes to me, how I feel – with no compromise trying to make a “sellable” song.

It’s better to be true to your own vision, no matter what. 🙂

  1. Hey Scarlet,
You should always follow your own vision, it never leads you astray. And now we’ll all benefit by your writing the songs from your heart. I’m so glad to have found you on soundclick, I’m also heading over to myspace next to see if there’s more tunes there. Looking forward to the new songs!
