Themes (and a bit of my story)

A bit of background
I am fortunate to have been born into a long line of musicians, singers and intuitives… magick and music on both sides. There were pianos in everyone’s homes, and music all around. Grandma was quite psychic, an excellent astrologer, and singer who performed in Vaudeville with her father. She taught me to do astrological charts at age 9 and I always valued her Universal, somewhat Pagan based spirituality.

Her mother read tarot cards in the Old Country – seems the women in that family have all been powerful and psychic individuals. Everybody played instruments, of course, and sang. On the other side are more singers and mystics. Great Grandma fascinated me with her incense and statues of Buddha throughout my early childhood, and was one of the first people to appear to me after her death. Grandpa was an opera singer and constantly had classical music playing. As a kid, I used to practice controlling my vibrato by copying him. And all along, both sides of the family exhibited this powerful deep philosophical, theatrical, musical vibe.

My father is quite psychic, and both he and my mother are musical. My mom has always been involved in singing, performing in trios, acapella groups and choirs.

As a child I was singing nearly as soon as I could talk, imitating all the vocalists my parents listened to. I delighted in learning different techniques and playing with vibrato and delivery, and wrote my first song at about 7 years of age. I knew I was here on this planet to sing, and pretty much that was that.

Like all children, I experienced things that some people would label psychic or mystic. (Too bad kids are told not to believe in such “nonsense”). In another culture these very basic human talents would have been nurtured and encouraged – which would result in a much more sensitive and aware society. Perhaps soon…

Further Awakening
At around 15 I experienced my first complete “altered state” awakening, in which I was no longer “me,” an LA teenager, but I was – for lack of a better term – The Universe.

Of course you and I both know that these things don’t fit into words – but for several hours I experienced the “I AM” experience that’s reported in mystic traditions throughout history. When I “came back” to my usual, smaller self, I vowed that I would never completely return to the amnesia of the human condition. And I never have.

This lead to a lifelong journey to constantly keep that “big” state of consciousness while in this “little” form. I devoured books by Alan Watts and Jeddu Krisnamurti, and how great to realize that I was not at all alone! So naturally it’s in the music. Many years ago I wrote a musical piece with narration that was intended to trigger this experience in others, and it became somewhat of an underground sensation. In 1996 a rather spacey version of the narration was posted at digitalgoddess.org called My Story, and it’s still there.

Our “themes” influence everything we do, the way we see and experience life, and the way we express ourselves.

And we are drawn to others of similar levels of awareness – which is probably why you’re reading this blog 🙂

  1. Hey Scarlet
The more I dive into your blog the more enchanted I am, after first discovering you on soundclick. The first song I listened to was “Wayside” – and man! What a powerful song. It’s haunting and really rocks. Your band is tight and just pounds that song out with a passion.
ANd you’re right, people on the save wavelength will definitely find you – and be lifelong fans.
